How much noise reduction is 9dB? What does it sound like?

We have put together some sound samples which will help familiarize yourself with these terms, and how noise effects our everyday lives. These use vehicles as a demonstration, but the concept is applicable to any noise source. Before playing the samples, please turn UP the volume on your PC.

Vehicle Noise Samples with Speech:
Here we have a relatively loud speaker (at 70dB) talking in a vehicle with differing noise levels. You can actually hear and compare how 3dB, 6dB, 9dB, 12dB, 15dB and 18dB of noise damping make a difference in intelligibility of the speaker.

Voice at 70dB
Noise at 73dB

Noise damped by 3 dB

Noise damped by 6 dB

Noise damped by 9 dB

Noise damped by 12 dB

Noise damped by 15 dB

Noise damped by 18 dB

Very Loud Vehicle:
Here we have a relatively loud speaker (at 70dB) talking in a loud vehicle such as a pickup truck or Hummer. You can hear and compare how 18dB of noise damping makes a large difference in intelligibility of the speaker.

Voice at 70 dB
Noise at 85 dB

Noise damped by 18 dB

Sound Damping of Sheet Metal:
Here are 2 examples of an 7” by 18” piece of sheet metal being struck by a wooden hammer to induce vibration and sound. The sample was recorded, then it was treated with 1.5mm (thick) of QuietCoat  118 on one side. You can hear the difference.

Undamped metal
Took 15.1 seconds for ringing to drop to 3 dB above background level

Damped metal
Took 0.359 seconds for ringing to drop to 3 dB above background level
